From 04th July 2026
Matisse's past clearly illustrates his attachment to fabrics. From a family of weavers and originally from the country of textiles, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) initially collected fabrics from his region before opening it up to extra-European productions such as Kuba fabrics from Congo and tapas from Oceania.
As decorative supports for still lifes and interiors, but also as outfits for models, this is why fabrics occupy a regular place in Matisse's work.
Furthermore, photographs of the artist's studios confirm the abundance of textiles in Matisse's daily life as a resource for the creation of pictorial compositions.
Furthermore, the exhibition aims to explore the impact of fabrics on the painter's artistic approach, whether in drawing, engraving, painting and costumes.
Finally, L'aventure du tissu aims to take the visitor on a journey through the influences of the West, then the East, before focusing on Polynesia and concluding with the creation of the chasubles for the Matisse chapel in Vence.
