The Basilica of Saint-Julien in Brioude, located in Haute-Loire, is the largest Romanesque church in Auvergne. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries on the tomb of Saint Julien, martyred in the 4th century and patron saint of the town, it became an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.
Its architecture combines different Auvergne and Velay influences, with a remarkable polychromy of stones (red sandstone, limestone, basalt, marble).
Numerous sculpted capitals, well-preserved medieval frescoes, and a decorative pebble pavement uncovered in the 1960s adorn the interior of the Basilica and give it a special atmosphere.
In 2008, 37 contemporary stained glass windows by Father Kim En Joong were installed by the Loire workshops in Chartres, bringing a colorful and unique light to the building.
Listed as a Historic Monument since 1840, the Saint-Julien Basilica of Brioude remains a jewel of heritage, recognized for the richness of its decorations, the diversity of its sculptures and its historical and spiritual importance.
