Property of the Dauphins de Saint-Ilpize until the end of the XNUMXth century, the feudal castle built on the top of a basalt peak retains within its walls a stately tower and a completely restored castle chapel.
The first mention of a fortified construction dates back to 1030. Overlooking the Allier 150 m, this fortress allowed the lords who were the owners to watch the valley of the Allier. Several enclosures flanked by towers surrounded the various districts of the city which descended to the banks of the Allier. The upper enclosure protected the stately home. Today all that remains is the castle walls, a tower which serves as a bell tower, and the castle chapel. The site of the castle is classified as a historical monument as well as the chapel.
