A characterful itinerary for a rejuvenating bike trip! 455 km along the Allier river, from its confluence at Nevers with the Loire to Langogne in Lozère near its source.

The Auvergne cycle route begins near the famous Bec d'Allier, where the Allier meets the Loire and the Via Allier meets the famous Loire by bike. Following the migration of wild salmon from the Allier, the Via Allier goes up the river, heads south and collects countless treasures to the top of the Gorges de l'Allier, very close to its source nestled in the Cévennes mountains.

The Allier, a major component of the Auvergne identity, is the most important tributary of the Loire and one of the last great wild rivers in Europe. The Via Allier allows the discovery along a fully marked route.

The course, accessible to all audiences, is gentle and rolling on its first half but becomes more spicy in the south when it meets the volcanoes that it will never leave. The Via Allier allows all practices, from the discovery of roaming by bike to long-distance travel. It is entirely covered in 8 to 14 days as a family, in 5 to 7 days as a regular.

Some work remains to be done on about twenty kilometers. This done, the route will follow almost all of the 421 km of the course of the Allier river, from its confluence with the Loire to the foot of its source. Eventually, the Via Allier will be linked to the north with the Loire by bike (from Nevers to the Atlantic) and the Véloroute des Fleuves (EV6 from the Rhine to the Atlantic), and to the south with the Via Fluvia (from the Allier to the Rhône river) and the Grande Traversée du Volcan by bike (from the Lot valley to the Allier valley).

The Via Allier is the Auvergne section of the V70, a cycle route project of national interest which crosses the Massif Central from north to south, from the Loire River to the Mediterranean.
