Built on a volcanic outcrop, the Château de Saint-Ilpize majestically overlooks the Upper Allier Valley. Its origins date back to the 11th or 12th centuries: texts already mention a fortified settlement (castrum) on this site as early as the 11th century. It is also known that at that time there was a large parish, with a territory equivalent to that of the seigneury, as well as a priory.
The castle, residence of the Dauphins of Auvergne for over 150 years, now consists only of spectacular ruins. Only the castle chapel, a jewel of Romanesque art built of volcanic stone, has been restored to its former glory after a restoration carried out by the Historic Monuments department and completed in 2001. Its bell tower with its arcades, pierced by two bays, still captivates visitors.
The first traces of a fortification date back to 1030. Quickly fortified with several enclosures, the fortress allowed the Dauphins of Auvergne to control the Allier gorges. The walls, crowned by the chapel and a square tower serving as a bell tower, encircled the outer baileys and the old quarters of the town, which in the 16th century extended as far as the river. Only the upper enclosure, housing the lord's residence, still retains a homogeneous structure.
The main entrance is via a ramp to the north, leading from the church square. It opens onto a lower courtyard protected by an ingenious defensive system: chicanes, bastions, posterns, and a pointed arch gateway. Below lies the lower enclosure, reinforced by a turret nicknamed "the Epaulette." Inside the main building, a remarkable 13th-century religious sculpture remains.
Perched between 470 and 770 meters above sea level, the Saint-Ilpize site offers one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the Ribeyre valley. Its unspoiled environment, pure air, and exceptional microclimate—with nearly 2,200 hours of sunshine per year, comparable to those of the French Riviera—make it a true haven of peace. A blend of heritage and nature, it's a prime location for fishing, hiking, kayaking, cycling, and horseback riding enthusiasts… and an ideal retreat for anyone seeking to escape the everyday.
