It was in his youthful notebooks (written in German) that Hans Hartung set out, while he was still a teenager, this ultimate ambition to “achieve[r] what is immeasurable. » And, basically, this exhibition reflects this journey towards excess and letting go of the gesture, from youth to death. Hartung's existence is itself of extraordinary intensity, because it is made up of numerous dramas and luminous successes. It is therefore a retrospective, the first since that of 2019 in Paris, and it displays among the sixty canvases and papers, some of the artist's masterpieces but also around ten pieces remarkable works on display for the very first time, as well as archives that are both instructive and moving. It therefore tells the story of a man, that of painting and also a bit of the tragic epic of a century.
Jean-Louis PRAT, Exhibition Commissioner
Thomas SCHLESSER, Director of the HARTUNG-BERGMAN Foundation
“My childhood flashes had, I am sure, an influence on my artistic development, on my way of painting. They gave me a sense of the speed of the line, the desire to capture the snapshot with the pencil or the brush, they made me aware of the urgency of spontaneity. There are often, in my paintings, zigzagged, broken lines, which run and cross my canvases as they did on my lightning books. »
