Small village overlooked by the ruins of a castle towards the west of the Haute-Loire department

All year, every day.

The village of Montgon is dominated by the ruins of a castle, built at the end of the XNUMXth, beginning of the XNUMXth century by a younger branch of the Léotoing-Montgon family. Its strategic position allowed the lords to control the narrow valley of the violet and to collect a right of way. In the XNUMXth century, the castle was handed over to stone collectors. The castle complex still has an imposing circular tower, the remains of a main building and part of the outer enclosure.
The parish capital is transferred to Grenier. Its 2015th century church, dedicated to St Grégoire, was built by Pierre de Montgon, bishop of Saint-Flour. The latter was restored in XNUMX. Grenier was in Gallo-Roman times, an important road junction on the "via arverna" which linked Clermont to Cahors.
The “La Violette” river gave its name to the A 75 motorway viaduct, designed to cross this valley. Commissioned in 1991, it provides the link between Haute-Loire and Cantal. It dominates the town with its 75 meters and its 40 tonnes of concrete and steel, while blending into the environment due to its sobriety.
